Suggested Reading

  • The Guide to Safe Scouting is the foundation of everything we do. You don’t have to read it cover to cover, but know how to look things up in it.
  • Youth Protection. In addition to the material here, every person 18+ in the troop takes several hours of Safeguarding Youth Training every two years.
  • Troop Position flashcards. Do you have a working role in the troop? This may help you think about how to fulfill it.
  • Introduction to Leadership Skills. A Scout troop is a youth-led, youth-run organization, but it’s not anarchy. This is how you perform leadership.
  • Merit Badges: what are they? what merit badges exist? what will you learn while earning them?

Suggested Shopping

Scouting is an equipment sport! In order to have a successful camping experience, you will either need or want:

  • a tent you are able to set up alone or with one other person
  • a sleeping bag rated for the weather we expect
  • a ground pad
  • shoes which fully cover the toe and heel, and secure around the ankle. This means at least tennis shoes, preferably boots. It does not mean crocs, sandals, keenes, flip flops, etc. Preferably waterproof, leather, or waterproofed leather.
  • a hiking backpack with hip-straps.
  • a water bottle or backpack bladder
